Hey there, thanks for stopping by. A little about me - I'm Brent McCombs, a photographer based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Right over here --------> you'll find a wide range of my images. A few are personal shots of friends and family, others are professional shots I've done for local publications or models.
I fell into photography as editor of Automotion at The Daily News - one of Halifax's two daily newspapers. As editor I was expected to shoot my own images. But I wasn't satisfied with the typical car-on-dealership-lot-with-sales guy-standing-beside-it type shot that had been the norm before I came on. So I studied shots in car magazines and began taking the cars to cool local locations doing cooler cover shots.
Pretty soon I started shooting other features for myself, and then for other editors. Fairly quickly I was being asked to do commercial ad work and covers for numerous supplements.
Almost as quickly, I discovered that I enjoyed the photography aspects of my position as much or more than the writing, editing and layout parts.
Two years ago my mom was diagnosed with cancer, and I left my position at the paper to be able to travel to Ontario a couple times a month to spend time with her. I really liked my job, so it was hard to leave, but for me, family comes first, so it was the only choice. This travelling meant that I was doing freelance writing and photography in what time I had to devote to work. As I continued to do photography, I found that I learned more and more about the craft. And the more I learned, the more I found that it was what I felt 'right' doing.
My mom passed away recently, and I have to make a decision on what direction to go, getting a career back on track. And after a good deal of thought and consideration, I've decided to pursue photography.
So this site is an ongoing record of my progress in the art, business, and joy of photography. Thanks for viewing.
